Primark’s opening in La Vaguada: A milestone in commercial architecture and the rebirth of an emblematic space

The recent opening of the Primark store  in La Vaguada shopping centre has not only marked a new chapter in the history of affordable fashion, but has also meant the revitalisation of a space that, for years, was the home of El Corte Inglés.

This event stands out for its importance in several aspects: the architecture and engineering of the building, the relevance of its location in the shopping centre and the symbolism of occupying a previously emblematic place for the people of Madrid.

La Vaguada, known for being the first shopping centre in Madrid, is a masterpiece of architectural design dating back to 1983. Designed by the artist César Manrique, it is characterized by its integration with the natural environment, offering an oasis of vegetation and natural light in the middle of the city. The structure of the building, with its “candles” on the roof and large skylights, has been a benchmark in the design of urban commercial spaces.

Primark’s arrival in La Vaguada has involved considerable architectural and engineering work. The new store, which occupies almost 6,000 m2 distributed over two floors, has required an adaptation of the space to house its wide range of products. This process has respected the essence of Manrique, maintaining natural light and vegetation as central elements of the interior design.

The importance of being present in La Vaguada is indisputable for Primark. This shopping centre is not only a point of reference for Madrid consumers, but also attracts visitors from all over the region for its wide range of shops, restaurants and entertainment. The opening of Primark in this strategic location promises to increase the flow of visitors and revitalise the shopping area.

The space now occupied by Primark has its own history. Previously, it was the location of El Corte Inglés, a brand that for 27 years served customers in La Vaguada. The closure of El Corte Inglés in July 2022 was a significant moment for the mall, marking the end of one era and the beginning of another.

The transition from El Corte Inglés to Primark symbolises a change in consumer trends and the dynamism of the retail market.

The opening of Primark in La Vaguada is therefore more than the arrival of a store; it is the continuation of the evolution of a commercial space that has been able to adapt to the times and remain relevant to the community.

With its commitment to sustainability and accessible fashion, Primark not only offers a new shopping option for the people of Madrid, but also contributes to the architectural and cultural legacy of La Vaguada.
